My Current EDC

Ok so let me show you some pics that I took recently of my EDC (Every Day Carry). Note that I don't take knives to my work (School).

My EDC Maxpedition Wallet, Maxpedition Fatty Pocket Organizer and my Ipad 2.

Most of my EDC is inside this organizer, let's see what's inside.

Inside is a FAK (First Aid Kit), small notebook, headphones, pens, Cree LED AA Flashlight, rechargeable batteries, my favorite knife a CRKT M-16 and tube container.

Depending on where I am going I choose between my two CRKT knifes. On top the CRKT Hammond Cruiser and the CRKT M-16. The light is a Cree AA Flashlight and it works great for only $8. The flashlight look similar to more expensive lights and so far has prove reliable during power outages and my Geocaching trips.

Inside the FAK I have just the basic stuff, Band-Aids, Pain reliever pills and water purification tablets.

When I want to go really small I just take my Spyderco Lady Bug and my Fenix E01.

Here's another option Fenix E01 and my Boker Subcom knife.

And finally my bag, Maxpedition Sitka Gearslinger.

I have used many tablets and everytime I love my Ipad 2 more. For an EDC computer it's almost as Apple says "Magical". It blends with my Maxpedition Sitka almost perfectly and it turns on in an instant. Just one word AWESOME.

To say that the Ipad 2 has replace my EDC netbook is an understatement. Now the only time I use the PC is when I have to print a document but everything else I do on the Ipad. I used to carry my Netbook everywhere but not anymore. The Ipad has an incredible battery life, mine last for over ten hours even while playing movies or games. Since this is a 3G model I have no problem connecting to the net from any place. As an EDC device is awesome is always on my Maxpedition Falcon II or in my LA Police Gear bag and since weight is not a problem you tend to forget is there.

This is a list of some of the emergency apps I have on the Ipad:

RadarScope; great weather app probably the best radar app in the store, pretty expensive but worth every penny.

Disaster Alert; I you want to stay on top of everything happening around the world in terms of emergencies this is the app.

QuakeWarn HD; it displays info on every major earthquake around the world and even sends you push notifications when the quake is near your location.

POM Alert; this little app will send you notifications when a emergency occurs near your actual location.

This has to be the best radar app out there. I have been using it for about 8 months now and let me tell you if you want to know the weather this is it. Very easy to use for weather enthusiasts like me I highly recommend this app for your Iphone and Ipad. I currently use this on both and it's simply amazing. This is info from the developers page:

RadarScope is a specialized display utility for weather enthusiasts that allows you to browse NOAA's public NEXRAD Level 3 data feed. It can display the latest base reflectivity, base velocity, storm relative velocity and more data from any NEXRAD radar site in the United States (now including Alaska and Hawaii), Guam, and Puerto Rico.

These aren't smoothed PNG or GIF images, this is real Level 3 radar data rendered in its original radial format for a high level of detail.

Whether you are scanning reflectivity for a mesocyclone's tell-tale hook echo, trying to pinpoint the landfall of a hurricane's eye wall, or looking for small features like velocity couplets in the radial velocity product, only RadarScope gives you the power to view radial NEXRAD weather radar on your iPhone or iPod.

Pinch or stretch to zoom in and out. Drag your finger around the map to scroll. Tap the radar sweep button in the toolbar to switch radars. Hiking Trip to El Yunque Rain Forest

This is a series of Pics from my last visit to el Yunque National Rain Forest. I took my Maxpedition Falcon II in this trip and let me tell you it is great for long walks. I had a 72oz bladder inside with a 32oz Nalgene bottle in the Maxpedition bottle holder outside and never felt any discomfort.

El Yunque as it is commonly known in the Island is the perfect place to spend a day if you love the outdoors.

Tsunami Drill on March 23

Well what can I say the drill as always was not taken seriously by many people. I have been monitoring certain frequencies to get some information on what's happening but nothing. Here in my hometown of Yabucoa we didn't heard not a single siren or warning except the one from the SJ Weather Service. The frequency used by the Emergency Management Office here in Yabucoa is completely silent. The warning was receive by my Yaesu VX-7R and the tsunami drill began. I must say that the state police is participating in the drill and I just heard some type of exercise on their frequency not sure what they were suppose to do.

Paris, 17 March – Following the devastating tsunami that struck Japan, 33 countries* are preparing to participate on 23 March in the first full-scale simulated tsunami alert exercise in the Caribbean. The goal is to test the Tsunami and other Coastal Hazards Warning System for the Caribbean and Adjacent Regions, which was established in 2005 by the countries of the region in collaboration with UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC).

According to the scenario developed by the organizers** of the exercise, countries in the Caribbean will receive an alert on 23 March concerning a fictitious earthquake of 7.6 magnitude off the coast of the American Virgin Islands. Bulletins will be issued by the West Coast/Alaska Tsunami Warning Center (United States) for Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, and by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) in Ewa Beach (Hawaii, US) for the rest of the area.

The exercise, named Caribe Wave 11, does not involve communities. It aims to test the effectiveness of alert, monitoring and warning systems among all the emergency management organizations (national focal points for tsunami alerts, weather forecast offices, national coast guard, etc.) throughout the region. The test is designed to determine whether Caribbean countries are ready to respond in the event of a dangerous tsunami.

Previous experience underlines the crucial importance of rapid transmission of information. It has also shown that national authorities must take risk into account at all levels, including education about hazards in schools, urban planning in coastal zones, modification of building codes and materials, evacuation plans for communities and organization of effective emergency services.

Over the last 500 years, 75 tsunamis have occurred in the Caribbean. This figure represents about 10% of the entire number of oceanic tsunamis in the world during that period. Tsunamis – caused by earthquakes or landslides, or of volcanic origin – have killed more that 3500 people in the region since the mid-19^th century (source: National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, NOAA). In recent decades, an explosion in population growth and the number of tourists in coastal areas have further increased the region’s vulnerability.

Lately here in Puerto Rico the earth is shaking more than it usually does. Since may 2010 there have been 4 earthquakes of a 5.0 magnitude or more. I have personally felt three of them and let me tell you this is not a common occurrence here in the island. Usually we felt one every two or three years but this series of earthquakes has got me thinking about what to do in case of an emergency. Let me ask you. Are you prepare for a strong earthquake? how about a tsunami? A tsunami wave in Japan destroyed everything six miles inland and I only live about 1.2 miles from the coast. So there is the possibility that my home town can be hit by a tsunami in the future so I decided not to wait and I already started preparing. Here is a list of things I have done already.

1. I have a Bug Out bag ready one for my wife and one for me.
2. I have already developed an scape route with three possible roads.
3. A way to communicate with each other.
4. Where to meet in case of an emergency.

This is a list so far but I will update soon.

WBBM Newsradio 780 in Chicago is reporting that radiation has been detected at Ohare Airport on passengers arriving from Tokyo. The passengers triggered radiation detectors while being screened by Customs.
The Chicago Aviation Department said they are adding additional screening procedures as a precautionary measures.
Homeland Security would not comment on the situation in Chicago but officials at California’s LAX said that DHS is stepping up screening efforts. Radiation was also detected on passengers arriving at Dallas-Fort Worth. The aircraft’s cabin filtration system also tested positive for radiation.

Testing my new Maxpedition Jumbo EDC

This last weekend I decided to test my new Maxpedition Jumbo EDC while Geocaching with my wife and some friends. I can tell you that the experience with this pack was great. I carried everything I needed for the trip and it was very comfortable. The trip took two hours to complete and I never felt any discomfort with the shoulder strap. I am preparing a full review of the pack later this week.

What is Cholera?

Cholera is a serious infectious disease caused by the bacteriaVibrio cholerae, which affects the intestinal system of the body. An infected person experiences severe vomiting, explosive diarrhea and severe dehydration. Without immediate medical treatment,cholera may result in death within four to twelve hours after symptoms begin. Due to a large loss of body fluids, cholera is gruesome in the way that it leaves survivors in their physical appearance, as well as in the biological toll it takes on the body.

Cholera is very contagious. It is spread by the unintentional consumption of infected feces that contaminate food and water. It can also be spread through human to human contact. Some people have been infected with cholera by eating raw or undercooked shellfish.

This is one of those items that everyone should have. I ordered these LED lights expecting a cheap product with weak battery life but on the contrary they re absolutely incredible. You get ten of these lights for $4.47 with free shipping now thats a deal.

Today in the name of science I decided to measure the time it took for the battery to run down I expected two to three hours max boy was I wrong. I turn it on at 10:00am Sept 9 and it is 12:21am Sept 10 and the light is still on. That's 14 hours and counting, the light is diminishing fast but it;s still usable. Shipping is a little slow considering they come from china. Shipping time is between 2-3 weeks and you get ten of them. These lights are a great addition to any BOB or emergency kit.

Let me start by saying that this is the most portable and versatile stove I have in my bug out bag. In my first try it boiled water in less than ten minutes with only one tablet. I was able to cook a Ramen pack of soup and it boiled the water perfectly. The tablet started burning with just one match and I didn't notice any foul smells coming from it.

German Military Braces for Scarcity After ‘Peak Oil’

A study by a German military think tank leaked to the Internet warns of the potential for a dire global economic crisis in as little as 15 years as a result of a peak and an irreversible decline in world oil supplies.

The study was produced by the Future Analysis department of the Bundeswehr Transformation Center, a branch of the German military. It was leaked in August, and its authenticity was confirmed last week by the German newspaper Der Spiegel.

The study states that there is “some probability that peak oil will occur around the year 2010 and that the impact on security is expected to be felt 15 to 30 years later.”

The concept of “peak oil” is a controversial one, as it signifies the point at which global oil production reaches its maximum level and then enters a permanent decline. As oil is a finite resource, most energy experts consider the eventual peak and decline of world oil production to be an inevitable reality.

But the timing of this zenith — whether in the near term, or some distant future — is a subject of fierce debate.

Many prominent national and intergovernmental energy agencies, including the International Energy Agency, maintain that oil reserves are sufficient to meet demand until at least 2030.

The German military study, which was analyzed and partly translated into English by Der Spiegel, declares that once peak oil begins in earnest, economies around the globe — including Germany’s — will probably struggle with price shocks as a result of higher transportation costs, and “shortages of vital goods could arise.”

“In the medium term the global economic system and every market-oriented national economy would collapse,” the study continues.

The lead author of the study, Lt. Col. Thomas Will, declined to comment to Der Speigel, as did the German Defense Ministry. According to Der Speigel, the report was in draft form and not intended for release to the public and had yet to be vetted by the German military leadership and other government agencies.

The German military is not alone in its concern over the implications of peak oil. According to an Aug. 22 report by Britain’s Guardian newspaper, British government ministries have been privately canvassing opinions from the energy industry and scientists on peak oil, while publicly dismissing fears of an imminent oil shortage as alarmist.

Fueling suspicion, the British government has rebuffed news media requests to turn over policy documents related to peak oil.

Every week the economic outlook of the United States seems worst than before and the outsourcing of jobs to places like China, Taiwan and Indonesia keeps accelerating. Remember once a manufacturing job goes to one of these places it's never coming back. These outlook seems specially true for Puerto Rico since it has been losing jobs during the last five years.

I am opposed to the building of the "mosque" two blocks from Ground Zero.

I want it built on Ground Zero.

Why? Because I believe in an America that protects those who are the victims of hate and prejudice. I believe in an America that says you have the right to worship whatever God you have, wherever you want to worship. And I believe in an America that says to the world that we are a loving and generous people and if a bunch of murderers steal your religion from you and use it as their excuse to kill 3,000 souls, then I want to help you get your religion back. And I want to put it at the spot where it was stolen from you.

There's been so much that's been said about this manufactured controversy, I really don't want to waste any time on this day of remembrance talking about it. But I hate bigotry and I hate liars, and so in case you missed any of the truth that's been lost in this, let me point out a few facts:

1. I love the Burlington Coat Factory. I've gotten some great winter coats there at a very reasonable price. Muslims have been holding their daily prayers there since 2009. No one ever complained about that. This is not going to be a "mosque," it's going to be a community center. It will have the same prayer room in it that's already there. But to even have to assure people that "it's not going to be mosque" is so offensive, I now wish they would just build a 111-story mosque there. That would be better than the lame and disgusting way the developer has left Ground Zero an empty hole until recently. The remains of over 1,100 people still haven't been found. That site is a sacred graveyard, and to be building another monument to commerce on it is a sacrilege. Why wasn't the entire site turned into a memorial peace park? People died there, and many of their remains are still strewn about, all these years later.

2. Guess who has helped the Muslims organize their plans for this community center? The JEWISH COMMUNITY CENTER of Manhattan! Their rabbi has been advising them since the beginning. It's been a picture-perfect example of the kind of world we all want to live in. Peter Stuyvessant, New York's "founder," tried to expel the first Jews who arrived in Manhattan. Then the Dutch said, no, that's a bit much. So then Stuyvessant said ok, you can stay, but you cannot build a synagogue anywhere in Manhattan. Do your stupid Friday night thing at home. The first Jewish temple was not allowed to be built until 1730. Then there was a revolution, and the founding fathers said this country has to be secular -- no religious nuts or state religions. George Washington (inaugurated around the corner from Ground Zero) wanted to make a statement about this his very first year in office, and wrote this to American Jews:

"The citizens of the United States of America have a right to applaud themselves for having given to mankind examples of an enlarged and liberal policy -- a policy worthy of imitation. ...

"It is now no more that toleration is spoken of as if it were the indulgence of one class of people that another enjoyed the exercise of their inherent natural rights, for, happily, the Government of the United States, which gives to bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance, requires only that they who live under its protection should demean themselves as good citizens ...

"May the children of the stock of Abraham who dwell in this land continue to merit and enjoy the good will of the other inhabitants -- while every one shall sit in safety under his own vine and fig tree and there shall be none to make him afraid."

3. The Imam in charge of this project is the nicest guy you'd ever want to meet. Read about his past here.

4. Around five dozen Muslims died at the World Trade Center on 9/11. Hundreds of members of their families still grieve and suffer. The 19 killers did not care what religion anyone belonged to when they took those lives.

5. I've never read a sadder headline in the New York Times than the one on the front page this past Monday: "American Muslims Ask, Will We Ever Belong?" That should make all of us so ashamed that even a single one of our fellow citizens should ever have to worry about if they "belong" here.

6. There is a McDonald's two blocks from Ground Zero. Trust me, McDonald's has killed far more people than the terrorists.

7. During an economic depression or a time of war, fascists are extremely skilled at whipping up fear and hate and getting the working class to blame "the other" for their troubles. Lincoln's enemies told poor Southern whites that he was "a Catholic." FDR's opponents said he was Jewish and called him "Jewsevelt." One in five Americans now believe Obama is a Muslim and 41% of Republicans don't believe he was born here.

8. Blaming a whole group for the actions of just one of that group is anti-American. Timothy McVeigh was Catholic. Should Oklahoma City prohibit the building of a Catholic Church near the site of the former federal building that McVeigh blew up?

9. Let's face it, all religions have their whackos. Catholics have O'Reilly, Gingrich, Hannity and Clarence Thomas (in fact all five conservatives who dominate the Supreme Court are Catholic). Protestants have Pat Robertson and too many to list here. The Mormons have Glenn Beck. Jews have Crazy Eddie. But we don't judge whole religions on just the actions of their whackos. Unless they're Methodists.

10. If I should ever, God forbid, perish in a terrorist incident, and you or some nutty group uses my death as your justification to attack or discriminate against anyone in my name, I will come back and haunt you worse than Linda Blair marrying Freddy Krueger and moving into your bedroom to spawn Chucky. John Lennon was right when he asked us to imagine a world with "nothing to kill or die for and no religion, too." I heard Deepak Chopra this week say that "God gave humans the truth, and the devil came and he said, 'Let's give it a name and call it religion.' " But John Adams said it best when he wrote a sort of letter to the future (which he called "Posterity"): "Posterity! You will never know how much it cost the present Generation to preserve your Freedom! I hope you will make a good use of it. If you do not, I shall repent in Heaven that I ever took half the Pains to preserve it." I'm guessing ol' John Adams is up there repenting nonstop right now.

Friends, we all have a responsibility NOW to make sure that Muslim community center gets built. Once again, 70% of the country (the same number that initially supported the Iraq War) is on the wrong side and want the "mosque" moved. Enormous pressure has been put on the Imam to stop his project. We have to turn this thing around. Are we going to let the bullies and thugs win another one? Aren't you fed up by now? When would be a good time to take our country back from the haters?
