Mountain Biking@Alberge Olimpico

In my quest to get in shape I decided to accept an invitation by one of my Geocaching friends to ride the famous trails in Salinas. These started as a combination of very technical single tracks and then a very arduous uphill section with a rewarding and incredible downhill from the top of a mountain. I rode half of the track before I had to stop to get some air but I’m getting better with each day. My goal with this track is to ride it without stopping one day.

Quake rattles Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) - A moderate earthquake has rattled the eastern Dominican Republic and western Puerto Rico.

No damage or injuries are being reported in what the U.S. Geological Survey recorded as a magnitude-5.1 temblor. The quake struck Sunday at 4:16 p.m. in the Mona Passage separating the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico.

The epicenter was roughly 59 kilometers (37 miles) south-southeast of the Dominican city of Higuey in the easternmost province of La Altagracia. The quake had a depth of 86 kilometers (53 miles).

The quake was felt across western Puerto Rico, as well as by high-rise dwellers in the northeast capital of San Juan.

Jiegu, China (CNN) -- The death toll in the China earthquake now stands at 1,114, relief officials said on Friday as rescuers continued to race against the clock to pull survivors from the rubble. Earlier, Premier Wen Jiabao traveled to the earthquake-devastated zone to inspect the damage and assure victims that the search would continue.
"Your suffering is our suffering," Wen said. "We are going through the same pain as you are. The family members you lost are also our family members, and we grieve for them as you do."

Wen surveyed the rubble of buildings and spoke with residents in the predominantly ethnic Tibetan region -- where anti-government sentiment is simmering -- to drive home Beijing's concern.

To one quart of water add 1/2 teaspoon baking soda, 1 teaspoon of salt, and 8 teaspoons of granulated sugar. Thoroughly mix all ingredients together.

This will replace electrolytes lost by the body due to dehydration caused by diarrhea, vomiting, excessive sweating, etc. A package of Kool-Aid, Crystal Light, etc. may be added to enhance the flavor and color.

Almost a month since the last post!

Sorry for not writing but I have been busy during the holidays but I will begin writing soon. :P

Hiking Trip @ El Yunque

   Do you have a place that you always wanted to go but never had the chance to? Well I had that place here on the island it’s called Pico del Este in the Caribbean National Forest better known as El Yunque. At more than 3,000 feet it’s an impressive site. Since I was a little kid I watch those radar towers wondering about them. A couple of weeks ago while searching about them I learned that they were abandon and somewhat accessible (well not really accessible one of them still working). So I decided to try to get to that famous mountaintop with the help of a couple of friends. It took about an hour and a half to get to the radar installation from the parking spot. The hike is insanely beautiful and amazing. Technically we were not supposed to go there and all the time we were expecting someone to just tell us to turn around. Well let me tell you I never expected to be there it is like a small city complete with housing facilities and all. The structure is rapidly deteriorating and at midday we couldn’t see 30 feet in front of us due to the intense fog. The real purpose for the trip was to place a Geocache for others to find but finally we decided to place it outside of the limits of the base. For more information about this cache click here.    Some info I found about Pico del Este. Pico del Este is located in the Caribbean National Forest, Naguabo, Puerto Rico. Pico del Este, one of the rainforest's peaks, houses a JSS (Joint Surveillance System) radar and communications site attached to the Roosevelt Roads Naval Base. Installations on Mt. Pico Del Este include the AN/FPS-67 and AN/SPS-48Cradarsites.

  I took my Maxpedition Falcon II backpack with the Maxpedition 10”x4” Bottle holder with a full Nalgene bottle in order to test them. I carried it for more than four hours that day and let me tell you they are great the backpack felt great and the 32oz Nalgene bottle provided enough water for the entire trip. I highly recommend them.
