My Current EDC

Ok so let me show you some pics that I took recently of my EDC (Every Day Carry). Note that I don't take knives to my work (School).

My EDC Maxpedition Wallet, Maxpedition Fatty Pocket Organizer and my Ipad 2.

Most of my EDC is inside this organizer, let's see what's inside. 

Inside is a FAK (First Aid Kit), small notebook, headphones, pens, Cree LED AA Flashlight, rechargeable batteries, my favorite knife a CRKT M-16 and tube container. 

Depending on where I am going I choose between my two CRKT knifes. On top the CRKT Hammond Cruiser and the CRKT M-16. The light is a Cree AA Flashlight and it works great for only $8. The flashlight look similar to more expensive lights and so far has prove reliable during power outages and my Geocaching trips.

Inside the FAK I have just the basic stuff, Band-Aids, Pain reliever pills and water purification tablets.

When I want to go really small I just take my Spyderco Lady Bug and my Fenix E01.

EDC Apps for the Ipad 2

To say that the Ipad 2 has replace my EDC netbook is an understatement. Now the only time I use the PC is when I have to print a document but everything else I do on the Ipad. I used to carry my Netbook everywhere but not anymore. The Ipad has an incredible battery life, mine last for over ten hours even while playing movies or games. Since this is a 3G model I have no problem connecting to the net from any place. As an EDC device is awesome is always on my Maxpedition Falcon II or in my LA Police Gear bag and since weight is not a problem you tend to forget is there.

This is a list of some of the emergency apps I have on the Ipad:

RadarScope; great weather app probably the best radar app in the store, pretty expensive but worth every penny.

Disaster Alert; I you want to stay on top of everything happening around the world in terms of emergencies this is the app.

QuakeWarn HD; it displays info on every major earthquake around the world and even sends you push notifications when the quake is near your location.

POM Alert; this little app will send you notifications when a emergency occurs near your actual location.

Follow this rules if you want to survive. The Survival Rule of Threes is a convenient way of memorizing the order of importance for each basic survival necessity. In extreme survival situations you cannot survive more than:

• 3 minutes without air
• 3 hours without shelter
• 3 days without water
• 3 weeks without food

Earthquake Preparedness

Lately here in Puerto Rico the earth is shaking more than it usually does. Since may 2010 there have been 4 earthquakes of a 5.0 magnitude or more. I have personally felt three of them and let me tell you this is not a common occurrence here in the island. Usually we felt one every two or three years but this series of earthquakes has got me thinking about what to do in case of an emergency. Let me ask you. Are you prepare for a strong earthquake? how about a tsunami? A tsunami wave in Japan destroyed everything six miles inland and I only live about 1.2 miles from the coast. So there is the possibility that  my home town can be hit by a tsunami in the future so I decided not to wait and I already started preparing. Here is a list of things I have done already.

1. I have a Bug Out bag ready one for my wife and one for me.
2. I have already developed an scape route with three possible roads.
3. A way to communicate with each other.
4. Where to meet in case of an emergency.

This is a list so far but I will update soon.

This is one of those items that everyone should have. I ordered these LED lights expecting a cheap product with weak battery life but on the contrary they re absolutely incredible. You get ten of these lights for $4.47 with free shipping now thats a deal.

Today in the name of science I decided to measure the time it took for the battery to run down I expected two to three hours max boy was I wrong. I turn it on at 10:00am Sept 9 and it is 12:21am Sept 10 and the light is still on. That's 14 hours and counting, the light is diminishing fast but it;s still usable. Shipping is a little slow considering they come from china. Shipping time is between 2-3 weeks and you get ten of them. These lights are a great addition to any BOB or emergency kit.

Review: Coghlans Emergency Stove

   Let me start by saying that this is the most portable and versatile stove I have in my bug out bag. In my first try it boiled water in less than ten minutes with only one tablet. I was able to cook a Ramen pack of soup and it boiled the water perfectly. The tablet started burning with just one match and I didn't notice any foul smells coming from it.

  The first time you use this stove you will notice the paint around the tablet will peel off, this is normal and I recommend to burn one tablet without cooking to get rid of this small problem. Use this stove with caution as it can cause a fire so try using it outside. Absence of sunspots make scientists wonder if they're seeing a calm before a storm of energy

   But for the past two years, the sunspots have mostly been missing. Their absence, the most prolonged in nearly 100 years, has taken even seasoned sun watchers by surprise. "This is solar behavior we haven't seen in living memory," says David Hathaway, a physicist at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala.

The sun is under scrutiny as never before, thanks to an armada of space telescopes. The results they beam back are portraying our nearest star, and its influence on Earth, in a new light. Sunspots and other clues indicate that the sun's magnetic activity is diminishing and that the sun may even be shrinking. Together, the results hint that something profound is happening inside the sun. The big question is: What?

Groups of sunspots forewarn of gigantic solar storms that can unleash a billion times more energy than an atomic bomb. Fears that these giant eruptions could create havoc on Earth and disputes over the sun's role in climate change are adding urgency to these studies. When NASA and the European Space Agency launched the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory almost 15 years ago, "understanding the solar cycle was not one of its scientific objectives," says Bernhard Fleck, the mission's project scientist. "Now it is one of the key questions."

Sunspots are windows into the sun's magnetic soul. They form where giant loops of magnetism, generated deep inside the sun, well up and burst through the surface, leading to a localized drop in temperature that we see as a dark patch. Any changes in sunspot numbers reflect changes inside the sun. "During this transition, the sun is giving us a real glimpse into its interior," says Hathaway.

When sunspot numbers drop at the end of each 11-year cycle, solar storms die down and all becomes much calmer. This "solar minimum" doesn't last long. Within a year, the spots and storms begin to build toward a new crescendo, the next solar maximum.

What's special about this latest dip is that the sun is having trouble starting the next solar cycle. The sun began to calm down in late 2007, so no one expected many sunspots in 2008. But computer models predicted that when the spots did return, they would do so in force. Hathaway was reported as thinking the next solar cycle would be a doozy: more sunspots, more solar storms and more energy blasted into space. Others predicted that it would be the most active solar cycle on record.

The trouble was, no one told the sun.

The first sign that the prediction was wrong came when 2008 turned out to be even calmer than expected. That year, the sun was spot-free 73 percent of the time, an extreme dip even for a solar minimum. Only the minimum of 1913 was more pronounced, with 85 percent of that year clear.

5.7 Earthquake Rattles Puerto Rico

A 5.7 Magnitude Earthquake struck Puerto Rico at 1:16 Sunday morning. At this time there are no reports of injuries or deaths. The epicenter was located at Longitude 18.4 N, Latitude 67.4 and was felt across the island. At around 1:20 local Hamradio Operators started monitoring the 147.480 MHz – simplex frequency and the 147.210MHz repeater for emergency traffic but none was reported.
